Welcome
Alcohol is widely used and enjoyed by many people. Sometimes people drink to unwind from work, celebrate and have fun or sometimes people drink to cope with life's difficulties when they are feeling sad, worried or depressed. Drinking in moderation is not harmful for most people. However, drinking to excess can cause medical, occupational, personal, financial, legal or social problems. These include having cirrhosis of the liver, relationship problems, injuries related to violence or accidents, job loss, engaging in harmful behaviour such as risky sex, and legal problems. If you think that your drinking is effecting your health, relationship, or work performance, you may want to cut down or abstain from alcohol.
Amicus Counselling specialises in helping individuals with alcohol problems. During your first visit we will assess your drinking pattern (the amount and frequency) and the consequences it may be causing. We will ask you about your treatment goals, what would you like to achieve, and work with you in developing a suitable treatment plan either to cut down your alcohol consumption or help you abstain from alcohol. We provide effective evidence based treatment for alcohol problems such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Relapse Prevention Strategies and Behavioural Self-Management (for individuals who wish to cut down rather than abstain from drinking). We will also help you cope with other psychological problems that may be related to your drinking including depression or anxiety.
